Town of Stockholm
About Stockholm
The Town of Stockholm comprises Approx 100 square miles with 3,592 residents (2000 Census) It is chiefly a rural area containing five hamlets; Winthrop, West Stockholm, Sanfordville, Knapps Station and Brookdale, which contain about half of the total residents. This area is primarily agricultural. However, recently there has been a decline in the number of working farms, creating the possible availability of large parcels for development. Current Activities
The Town of Stockholm is in continuing effort to develop the Township. Since 1996, the Town of Stockholm has been involved with the Alliance for Municipal Power in an attempt to bring Municipal Power to this and 17 other surrounding communities. This project will reduce the existing costs considerably to all within the 17 surrounding areas. The Town is one of the leading agencies for this endeavor. The Town Supervisor is currently the Treasurer for the Alliance. The Alliance is now conducting a feasibility study to determine if it would be cost effective to continue and should have the results of the study in the spring of 2007. This would greatly enhance the furthering of economic development of this area.
Stockholm has acquired 12.5 miles of abandoned railroad bed for ATVs and snowmobiles for recreational use and currently received a grant to rehabilitate the trail and purchase another 1.5 miles which is now pending.
2006 The Township of Stockholm also received a $400,000.00 grant from the St Lawrence Housing Council for low income housing.
