History

The Town of Lawrence was established in 1829. Traditionally, there were several businesses along the Deer River, such as a grist mill, black-smith shop, foundry, and furniture shop. These shops are all gone today. However, we now have Cool Brands; which makes cottage cheese and yogurt and employs approximately 150 people. Nicholville Telephone Company and SLIC, our local communications company. This company’s efforts have been key to the completion of the fiber ring around St Lawrence County and the Tri-Town Area. We also have NuMed Inc a privately owned local business that produces cardiovascular medical products for the smallest of patients to adults with heart defects. This company is very successful and has customers all over the world. The Town of Lawrence traditionally has and remains primarily an agricultural area for dairy, beef and crops. We have many click and mortar businesses springing up as well as small businesses (brick and mortar) in the area.

Current Activities

The Town of Lawrence constructed new Municipal offices, a highway garage and a salt shed in 2002. The complex is located on State Hwy 11 in the village of Lawrenceville. The building of this complex and having all the town businesses conducted in one area has been beneficial to the conducting of the town business. The salt shed was made possible through a grant from clean water/clean air act and the municipal office building was made possible through a very generous $150,000.00 donation from a private individual. This individual also donated all the lands the buildings are constructed on and we also received a $20,000.00 grant from USDA.

There have been several new business relocations to the area in the last 2 or 3 years. Three new restaurants, a beauty shop, antique and gift shops, craft barn, and book store.

In the spring of 2007, our recreation association runs t-ball and soft-ball programs for our youth. In the fall of 2006 this organization started our youth football program.
